Fedora & tiny fishes
No post yesterday, but I hit all my goals, used my time well, and feel fine with it. Yesterday's big win was finishing the quilted wall hanging's top (the pieced part!) and a good phone call with a friend. I visited a new-to-me Nepalese grocer and had my brows threaded for the first time since I moved. I checked my work email, too... it's coming.
Digital Garden WIP!
My digital garden page has been a little... uninspired since the jump. It's one of the first pages that I made when I was still very premade-layout-reliant, so I wanted to build it (almost!!) from scratch this time.
I envisioned it feeling more place-like, like a physical place you could walk around. I used this grid generator to build out a kind of courtyard in the center.
A fountain seems like a natural fit, but I'm not sure if this is the one. I'm not sold on any fonts or textures, either. The images for each box will flip to an aerial view of a different type of garden on hover, and I will style a fun button on each plot to link to a different page, with one spare one for now. I think I might make a garden page about recovery resources? It's hard being openly sober online, in education, and living in a surveillance state. I always do a double-take when talking about being sober, which I shouldn't! We're all over the place! But the stigma is strong, as is the fear of being on some kind of list.

My ability to mess up a simple thing knows no bounds, this took five minutes of sewing and would have done it completely differently if I were to do it again. But it doesn't matter! I love this strap. School starts so soon, this was nesting behavior. Honestly, I'm kind of ready for school to start. Unstructured time is starting to lose its charm for me.
Medaka fry
I'm sorry for the WORST photo you've seen all day! This is the best I could get of these fry who are just now a month old, and I assure you that algae is there on purpose (I am out here cultivating green water for them) as an extra food/habitat for food (infusoria).
Medaka are incredible little fish. They thrive in big buckets with no filter or heater, just some plants and occasional water changes. They lay eggs, eat mosquito larvae, and look like tiny koi. I have a zero-gravity chair (hideous but incredible) and I have my coffee and just look at them and look after them in the mornings. You can find eggs on eBay and they're easy to hatch. I love watching youtubers with medaka channels like Hiro's Aquarium. Most are living in Japan, but they are becoming more popular in the States and Australia.

This may not look like a lot, but the battle the last two days was trying to run this dumb little game on three different Linux distributions. Here's the Goldilocks-style saga:
Linux Mint (laptop): The game mostly played on Mint once we got the right proton version going. Unfortunately, the transparent overlay (where you can set your timer/avatar/table of work buddies in the corner of your screen) wasn't working, which kind of defeats the purpose of working while on the game. Otherwise you're just toggling between a full-screen game (you can't just shrink it without everything shrinking in it) and your work, which is not productive. Emotes didn't work, but that was less of an issue. It also crashed my computer constantly.
Ubuntu (desktop): Could not get it to launch. We tried a dozen version of Proton, gave up.
Fedora KDE Plasma: Since my desktop was pretty much empty, we installed Fedora KDE because some HERO on the Steam community tab said he had gotten the game to work fully with this custom proton version. Now I'm using it more productively since I just hide everything but the little me and the timer. Fedora does require a little more interaction with the CLI but I am getting braver! Every distro has taught me some new things about how computers work under the hood.
Tomorrow:
I am going to the pool for the last adult swim of teacher summer! I'm going to investigate teacher planners (do I need one? I do everything else by paper and that's been great so far)! I'm going to possibly FINISH this big wall hanging so my projects are wrapped with a nice little bow before the first day of school.
And it feels so nice to do that. To have time to actually get caught up in life. I have never felt this calm and centered going into the school year and I hope the kids really feel it. I'm so excited to get hugs and see moms and hear how summer went for them.
