one month of movie friday
We have become film people like everyone else since 2022!
I was never a movie person - they are long, they require focus, and I have that attention deficit thing. I am also, annoyingly, someone who can watch three episodes of a series perfectly fine. It turns out it's the expectation of the time commitment that freaks me out, not the amount of time I can actually watch a story play out.
And even the best shows out there have limits due to the format of a show: they need to appeal to enough people to not get cancelled, they need to have large and small drama arcs being created and resolved continually, and the emotional range will necessarily be limited by these constraints. Not to mention the weirdness factor of independent film that could never make it to network TV.
But y'all already know this. Anyways, spouse and I are watching one movie each Friday now as a dedicated date by Non-Movie People. I plan to round them up periodically. Neither of us have seen many movies at all, so a lot of very very popular movies are new to us. Feel free to recommend movies in my guestbook for our growing list - it would make our lives easier to have a nice big pool. And no, I'm not really interested in Letterboxd - I don't really want to engage with more platforms and I'd rather contain my movie experiences here.

We discovered that you're allowed to just stop a long movie and watch it in three sittings! Time-fearful friends, be not discouraged! Most of the promotional material for the film was about the main character being hot and rich and having fun, but that's just the first third of the film - the rest gets into the workings of a messy oligarch family and checked my I Love the Sopranos box. This movie made us talk about the range of feelings in a film being so much wider than in a series.
kpop demon hunters
I loved it. I love watching the girls grub out like little gremlins. Spouse loved all the trans allegory fan theory stuff about shame. We both loved the neurotic tiger friend because we live with an absolutely gigantic 120+lb neurotic dog. Very fun.
teenage sex and death at camp miasma
This is the best one of the month and I recommend you go see it in theaters. Seeing this movie with an emotive queer audience made me feel part of something bigger, I swear. This is also the first time either of us had been in a theater in over seven years! It does help with the attention span for me as an adult, where as a kid I would feel like I was melting out of my chair.
Anyways. The self-awareness of horror cliches, the shame around wanting the male gaze, the trouble of being stuck in your head and not your body, the dipping sauce scene... it's a ride. And if you don't like horror movies (I don't), it's not actually scary or suspenseful for the most part.
spine of the night
This is a more recent (2021?) rotoscoped animated fantasy film with a lot of gore! It took me a while to get into it because of the animation style, but once the story was rolling I was invested (despite blood and guts)
